History of Our Organization

The Northwest chapter of the American Society of Home Inspectors was formed almost forty years ago.  At the time, it included the surrounding states and British Columbia.  People could join as an associate but were not a full-fledged voting member until taking tests and an in-person interview.  There was no licensing locally, or anywhere else in the country.  The American Society of Home Inspectors grew as a national organization, and soon became the premier association touting the 'highest' standards.  The chapter sponsored one and two day continuing education seminars, advertised the association and its members to the public and to related professions, and represented the membership at the legislative level.

The Chapter continued these activities through several name changes, always seeking to raise the professional level of home inspectors and to encourage camaraderie among its members.  In 2005, ASHI Washington formed The Washington Home Inspectors Legislative Advisory Group (WHILAG) in conjunction with several other home inspector organizations.  WHILAG is a coalition of home inspectors who are members of major national home inspectors’ associations, as well as state-affiliated associations and franchises, and independent home inspectors. The coalition was established in 2005. This group developed the language and standards that went into the law calling for licensing. Through these efforts home inspector got a law that was good for the consumer and not overly restrictive.   Licensing was enacted in 2009.
ASHI Washington changed its bylaws and name again in 2023.  Membership now includes all Washington licensed home inspectors . In 2023 The chapter evolved once again to brand itself Northwest Building and Home Inspectors Association  Including inspector from Oregon Idaho, Washington and Alaska.
